    In this article: China’s negotiations to re-enter GATT(关贸总协定) reached a climax（高潮）as the important Uruguay round (乌拉圭回合) of world trade negotiations was concluded and the new WTO was set up. This article is an interview with the retired Director-General (总干事) of GATT, Mr Peter Sutherland, whose term finished on December 31, 1994. Mr Sutherland is credited with (被誉为) being a key figure in bringing the Uruguay round negotiations to a successful conclusion. In this interview, which Mr Sutherland gave especially to Terry Snow of the New Zealand Listener (新西兰知音杂志) for the World of English, he talks about GATT, the new WTO, the principles of negotiation and China’s place in the world trade system.
