PART H Reading Comprehension (50%)
Section A
Directions: There are 4 passages in this part. Each
passage is follozoed by some questions or un-finished
statements. For each of them there are four choices marked
A, B, C, andD. You should decide on the best choice and
blacken the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a
pencil.
Question 21 to 25 are based on the following passage:
People 20 years from now may be able to fly on an
airplane from New York to Tokyo, a distance of more than
10,800 kilometer, in just 2 hours. This proposal plane
would be both airplane and spacecraft -- a space plane. It
could leave the ground and return like an airplane, but it
also would have a rocket engine. This would permit it to
climb above the atmosphere and go into a low earth orbit.
In normal flight, the space plane could reach a speed of
5,000 or 6,000 kilometers an hour, about 5 or6times the
speed of sound, but it also could fly up to 25 times the
speed of sound, more than 7,000kilometers an hour. Such
speeds are needed for the plane to leave the atmosphere and
go into orbit.
Experts say such an airplane could be used for many
civilian and military purlxxSes. It could carry people and
goods anywhere in the world in just 2 or 3 hours.
Scientists say the space plane also might some day replace
both rockets and the space shuttle as the best way to carry
satellites into orbit and people to a space station.
But researches say they first must solve many
technical problems. A chief problem, how to design an
engine that can make a plane go so fast. Traditional jet
engines burn hydrocarbon fuel made from oil, but these
engines become too hot at about 3 times the speed of sound.
So engineers are experimenting with a kind of jet rocket
engine that would use hydrogen fuel. Cold liquid hydrogen
first would cool the engine, then as the hydrogen warms, it
would become gas that is burnt as the space planes
fuel.Scientists say they also must do much research on
materials that are very light in weight. These materials
also must not be damaged by the extreme heat as the plane
re-enters earth atmosphere.
Americas Space Agency and Defense Department have
agreed to pay several companies to begin design of a space
plane. Some experts say it may cost up to 3,000 million
dollars to build the first experimental space plane. They
expect it may not be completed until the middle 1990s, and
they hope the plane will be ready for regular use soon
after the year 2,000.
21. The main idea of this passage is about
A. a proposed space plane
B. the future planes
C. the difference between an ordinary airplane and the
space plane
D. the technical problems about planes
22. If a space plane will leave the earths atmosphere
and fly into orbit, it must reach a speed of
A. more than 5,000 or 6,000 kilometers an hour
B. less than 5,000 or 6,000 kilometers an hour
C. more than 27,000 kilometers an hour
D. less than 27,000 kilometers an hour
23. The "proposed plane" in this passage refers to a
plane which is
A. being sold B. being planned
C. being examined D. being experimented
24. Which of the following statements is true?
A. A space plane can make use of hydrocarbon as its
fuel.
B. A space plane will need materials light in weight.
C. Some day a space plane will have the same use as
both rockets and the space shuttle do.
D. Several companies in the United States have agreed
to pay for the design of a space plane.
25.We learn from this passage that the most important problem as to making a space plane is
A. designing a suitable engine
B. dealing with the earth temperature

PARTⅡ ReadingComprehensiOn
Section A
