Part IV Reading Comprehension (55 minutes, 40 points)
Directions: There are 5 passages in this part. Each of the passages are followed by 4 questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are 4 choices marked A, B, C and D Choose the best one and mark your answer on the ANSWER SHEET.
Passage 1
What should you think about in trying to find your career? You are probably better at some school subjects than others. These may show the strengths that you can use in your work. A boy who is good at mathematics can use that in an engineering career. A girl who spells well and likes English may be good at office work, so it is important to know the subjects you do well in at school. On the other hand, you may not have any specially strong or weak subjects but your records show a general satisfactory standard. Although not all subjects can be used directly in a job, they may have indirect value. A knowledge of history is not required for most jobs but if history is one of your good subjects you will have learned to remember facts and details. This is an ability that can be useful in many jobs. Your school may have taught you skills, such as typing or technical drawing, which you can use in your work. You may be good at metal work or cookery and look for a job where you can improve these skills. If you have had a part-time job on Saturdays or in the summer, think what you gained from it. If nothing else, you may have learned how to get to work on time, to follow instructions and to get on with older workers. You may have learned to give correct change in a shop, for example. Just as important, you may become interested in a particular industry or career by seeing it from the inside in a part-time job. Facing your weak points is also part of knowing yourself. You may be all thumbs when you handle tools; perhaps you are a poor speller or cannot add up a column of figures. It is bitter to face any weaknesses than to pretend they do not exist. Your school record, for instance, may not be too good, yet it is an important part of your background. You should not be apologetic about it but instead recognize that you will have a chance of a fresh start at work.

33.From the passage we learn that if a student‘s school performance is not good, he_____

Passage 2
Air travel is such an everyday experience these days that we are not surprised when we read about a politician having talked with the Japanese Prime Minister one day, having to attend a conference in Australia the following morning and having to be off at midday to sign a trade agreement in Bangkok. But frequent long distance flying can be so tiring that the traveler begins to feel his brain is in one country, his digestion in another and his powers of concentration nowhere----in short, he hardly knows where he is. The fatigue we normally experience after a long journey is accentuated when fly from east to west or vice versa because we cross time zones. Air travel is so quick nowadays that we can leave London after breakfast and be in New York in eight hours. Yet what really disturbs us is that when we arrive it is only lunch time, but we have already had lunch on the plane and are expecting dinner. Doctors say that since air travelers are in no condition to work after crossing a number of time zones, they should go straight to bed on arrival. Airline pilots, in fact, whose experience is so obviously relevant that it ought to serve as a guide, often live by their own watches, ignoring local time, and have breakfast at midnight if necessary. They have far less reason to worry about their health than executives because they are used to flying and are physically fit. Businessmen who go on long-distance flights, however, are usually out for promotion and flattered to have been chosen because it adds to their status and prestige in the firm. They are lucky if the company is enlightened enough to insist on their taking the doctor‘s advice and resting for a day before working. Sometimes the managing director is such an energetic character that he expects everyone to be as fit as he is. As he has never felt any ill effects after flying himself, the schedule he lays down is so exacting that the employee is too exhausted to carry it out satisfactorily. He must either go straight to an important meeting as soon as his plane touches down or else return as soon as the meeting is over to report to his boss. Dynamic tycoons [企业界巨头] of this type often do not realize how disastrous this policy may be for the man‘s health and the company‘s reputation.
35.Which of the following statements is true, according to the second paragraph?
A We experience fatigue on flights because the journeys are too long.
B We experience more severe fatigue when we fly from east to west.
C Crossing time zones increases the fatigue we experience on a long flight.
D We experience fatigue when meals schedule is disturbed.
36.Airline pilots suffer less from long-distance flight, because ____.
A they always go straight to bed after the journey
B they take no notice of local time and are physically healthier
C their experiences are relevant and typical
D they are trained to endure strong pressure
37. It can be inferred from the last paragraph that the employees who always go on long-distance business flight _____.
A are always as energetic as the dynamic tycoons
B are treated unkindly by their companies
C should take doctor‘s advice and rest for a day before working
D may make mistakes because of tiredness
38. The word "exacting" (last paragraph, line 6) probably means _____.
A accurate
B strict and demanding
C tiring
D scientific
Passage 3
Some individuals and citizens‘ groups have expressed concern about the level of violence in television programs, particularly in action-adventure series and cartoons. They argue that viewers, especially children, may learn to see violence as the only way to resolve conflicts. Early experimental researchers compared the play of children who had seen aggressive behavior on television with the play of a control group of children who had watched nonviolent programs. Concern was intensified by findings that indicated a higher level of aggressive play in the violent-television group. Other researchers attempted to determine whether violent programs simply stimulated higher energy levels in children or actually caused them to learn violent and antisocial behavior. The results of different studies conflicted. Some researchers claimed that televised violence actually had a positive cathartic effect, allowing some viewers to release heightening tensions; these findings, however, were not confirmed in further studies. Other scholars pointed out that both prosocial and antisocial behavior can be learned from television. Social scientists find it especially difficult to assess accurately the subtle, cumulative effects of viewing a broad variety of television programs throughout childhood. Distinguishing the possible effects of television from other influences at home and at school is also difficult. Current research suggests that moderately higher levels of antisocial behavior can be traced to television viewing, but further study needs to be done to confirm it. Because of the long-standing tradition in the U.S. of freedom of speech and of the press, the government would probably not attempt to directly limit or censor the appearance of violence on television. Among the networks and producers, pressure from concerned citizens continues to be balanced by the increasing popularity of high-energy action-adventure programs.
39.The passage is mainly about ________.
A violent TV programs and social problems
B researches on TV programs for children
C the proper TV programs for children
D children learning violence from TV programs
40.Which of the following statements is true according to the passage?

Alaska is the largest of the states in size and the second smallest in population in the States. Nearly everything about this 49th state is big. Its Mount McKinley is higher than any other peak in North America. Its Yukon River is one of the longest navigable waterways in the world. Huge animals still thrive in its open spaces Kodiak. Alaska is a land of spectacular contrasts, smoking volcanoes and frozen tundra (冻原),hot springs and ice floes (浮冰), creeping glaciers (冰川) and virgin forests. This vast, raw, and rough land thrusts a chain of volcanic islands more than a thousand miles southwest into the Bering Sea. Reaching beyond the international date line, the land area originally spanned four time zones. It stretches northward far into the Arctic Circle, and to the south its Panhandle extends for miles between the Pacific Ocean and the Canadian Rockies. The state is so large that it increased the area of the United States by a fifth. Alaska is more than twice the size of Texas. About a third of the vast area is forested, and glaciers cover more than 28,800 square miles. The Malaspina glacier complex is larger than the state of Rhode Island. The Stars and Stripes have flown over Alaska since March 30, 1867, when the vast land was purchased from Russia for 7.2 million dollars. In 1959 Alaska became the first new state since New Mexico and Arizona had achieved statehood in 1912. The name Alaska comes from the Aleut word alaxsxaq, meaning object toward which the action of the sea is directed, that is, the mainland. Passage5
Pediatrician, Dr. Tony Walterston has growing evidence that the health deficit between those in Social Class Five, that is the lowest rung on the socioeconomic ladder, and those who are better off, begins in childhood. In mortality, the biggest effect is in child accidents. There are five-fold accidents between Social Class Five and Social Class One, particularly in road accidents. And this is almost certainly due to the lack of safe play areas, in deprived areas. So basically children play on the streets. In the homes, it is related to home safety and the lack,in poor housing, poor quality housing, of safety measures. So there are no smoke alarms,so the fires are more common, and there is lack of protection on stairs and on windows, so that children have accidents much more commonly. This is a major difference. All infections are much greater in Social Class Five such as pneumonia, whooping cough, ear infections. Ear infection, in particular, has an impact in education, because children have hearing loss. And these are probably due to damp and over-crowding, so that children are brought more closer together and infections happen more easily. More than one in three children are now growing up in relative poverty. Twenty years ago it was one in ten. And family‘s income is less than half the national average wage. Dr. Iona Heath, who works in an inner city practice in London, sees the impact on her patients of low income, compounded by poor employment prospects, poor housing and poor diet. It generates a chronic stress that seems to undermine physical and mental health. You can see that people look tired, and stressed, and defeated. I think that‘s the argument about relative poverty. It‘s that there‘s a lot of rhetoric about how well people are doing. You see a lot of wonderful, glossy advertisements about how life could be and yet it‘s million miles away from the life that you have. And you begin to feel a bit overwhelmed by it.I do not remember the number of times that I have to prescribe anti-depression medication for people who have become clinically depressed. But they and I know that what they need is more appropriate housing and more space. The other side of the coin is that the socially advantaged are living longer, healthier lives than ever before.
47.Social Class Five children are vulnerable to accidents for all the following reasons, except that _____.
A they do not have safe play areas and often play on the streets
B they lack quality housing and safety measures at home
C there are always many people crowded in one house
D there is no protection on stairs and windows in their house
48.The relation between poverty and health ________ according to the passage.
A is hard to define
B does exist
C is only known by doctors
D needs further study
49.According to Dr. Heath, the influence of poverty upon her patients is ____.
A both physical and mental
B more mental than physical
C more physical than mental
D neither mental nor physical
50.What would the following paragraphs of this excerpt discuss about?
A How the rich get rich.
B How does the life of the socially advantaged differ from the socially disadvantaged.
C Why the socially advantaged enjoy healthier lives.
D How to bring together people on different rungs of the social ladder.

Part V Translation (30 minutes, 15 points)
Directions: Translate the following passage into Chinese and put your translation on the ANSWER SHEET.
Almost as soon as rescue workers began searching through at the sites of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, many Americans started another search -- not quite as desperate, perhaps, but important nonetheless. Citizens looked for information about the places the killers came from and the ideas and beliefs that could drive men to lay down their lives for the chance to kill ordinary American office workers. Foreign reporters with expertise in the Middle East say their phones have been ringing off the hook, and in fact every newspaper in every town across the nation has run a variation on two basic stories: What is Islam? and Why Do They Hate Us? Adding to the shock of thousands of violent deaths was the confusing information that the people who so passionately want us dead belong to nations and groups that many Americans had never even heard of.

Part VI Writing (30 minutes, 15 points)
Directions: You are asked to write in above 120 words about the title of Jobs For Life?. You should base your composition on the outline given in Chinese below: 1.

1. 答案 A
Betty never came to our house but that we sent her an invitation.从语上讲,but (except)是介词,"that…"
Jack was no cleverer than Jane in maths. = Jack was not any cleverer than Jane in maths. 其中的no等于not any,但更加强调否定。
3. 答案 B
解析:主句中的natural决定了从句中必须用do(be)或should do (be) 的虚拟形式,如:It was natural that he (should) fail the entrance exam, for he had not studied hard. He arranged that we (should) leave the farm immediately after 6 a.m.
4. 答案 B
解析:although (though) the boy was young = young as the boy was,但后者是书面强调写法。再如:Although it was dark, the cat could see everything. = Dark as it was, the cat…。
但一个词修饰be(是)动词,则须后置,如:He was really good. Is it large?""Yes, it really is."
Smith proposed (that) a new designer be employed. He doubted whether they could succeed
Each farmer (Each of the farmers) got bumper harvest. every则只能作形容词用,如:Every farmer (Every one of the farmers) had a bumper harvest.
The bird flew down from above the peak. from behind是"从后面",如:The submarine came up from under the water. from across是"从对面",如:A cow ran over from across the meadow.

解析:宾语从句是一个强调句(it be…that…),尽管中间夹了一个not the disease。再如:It is his way of thinking, not his knowledge, that is of much help to his research.
10. 答案 A
We saw him jump down from the rock. He noticed somebody enter the buidling.

Should Employers Offer Jobs For Life? There are many advantages and disadvantages to offering employees job security for life. The advantage for the employee is that, job security is the base on which he plans his future accordingly. For the employer, the employee represents an investment because of the number of hours of training required and the company will continue to have a return on this investment. As we all know, feeling secure about where our future income will come from is very important for our well-being.
Its disadvantage lies in the tendency to decreased productivity. In general, employees who are certain that they can never lose their jobs tend to work less efficiently, thereby contributing to an overall reduction of productivity in the company. For instance, it is common to walk into a government office and see employees filing their nails, making personal calls on the telephone, taking three-hour lunches, or surfing the Internet for fun.
In short, I disagree that companies should offer their employees jobs for life. It is an outmoded way of conducting siness.
