Title: Stress in Modern Life
Outline: 1. 现代生活的压力无处不在
2. 人们对压力有各种不同的看法
3. 我的看法
As everyone knows, stress is a natural part of everyday life and there is no way to avoid it. As the pace of modern life continues to increase, we are always feeling on the go from morning till night. And it is hard to slow down. Therefore, stress goes hand in hand with the life in a competitive society.
Different people, however, think of stress quite differently. Some believe that stress is not the bad thing it is often supposed to be. They are of the opinion that a certain amount of stress is vital to provide motivation and give purpose to life. Others argue that stress contributes to one's mental decline and hence endangers his health. According to them, relaxation, the opposite of stress, is essential for a healthy mind and body.
Personally, I'm in favor of the former view. I think it is impossible to avoid stress when one is entirely devoted to the career he pursues. In my opinion, it is only when the stress gets out of control that it can lead to poor performance and ill health.

Title: The role of Migrant workers
Directions: Migrant workers have made a great contribution to the prosperity of cities. In this part, you are to write a composition of 160~200 words about the role of migrant workers. You can agree and/or disagree, completely or partially to the above statement. But no matter which position you take, you should give sound supporting details.
As is known to all, migrant workers have made a great contribution to the prosperity of cities. They are an indispensable part of out work force. Most of them work on construction sites. There is no doubt that without migrant workers many of the construction projects would have to be held up for lack of manpower. In addition, a large number of migrant workers is a factor which stimulates the consumption of food and daily items. This helps to develop food industry and service industry in cities. All these are positive aspects of migrant workers in cities.
However, as a popular saying goes, "Everything has two sides". The same is the case with migrant workers. First, they have trouble getting their children into childcare centres and schools because they are unregistered residents in the city. As you know, illiterate people, who usually ignorant of laws, tend to make troubles concerning law and order. Second, most of the migrant workers swarm into big cities just to make money. Being ignorant and incompetent, some of them would stop at nothing to get what they want. Therefore, they are a potential threat to the peace and stability of the society.
In my opinion, in the appraisal of migrant workers, it is one-sided to affirm everything or to negate everything. We should appreciate the great contribution made by them, and at the same time pay enough attention to the problems caused by them.

Title: Changes in People's Daily Expenses
Outline: 1. State the changes in people's daily expenses in the past five years
2. Give possible reasons for the changes
3. Draw your own conclusion
Note: You should quote as few figures as possible.
In the past five years, there have been great changes in people's daily expenses. According to the figures given in the table, the amount of money spent on food decreased gradually, accounting for 35 percent in 2000. However, there was a rapid increase in clothing expenses, which make up 17 percent in 2000. In addition, the table shows an upward tendency in recreation expenses. The same was the case with other expenses.
What caused these remarkable changes? In my opinion, there are at least three good reasons. To begin with, with the rapid development of agriculture in China, the output of grain, fruit, vegetables and milk has sharply increased, which contributes to the decline in their prices. Secondly, the family incomes of people have greatly risen in the past few years so that people now can afford expensive clothing and some of them even want to dress in the latest fashion. Finally, as the living conditions improve, the demand for a variety of recreations is growing steadily, too.
In short, with the incomes rising continuously, people are no longer reconciled to living a simple, monotonous life. They are eager to make their life interesting and exciting. Therefore, I am sure that people will spend more money on clothing and recreations.

APPLICATION LETTER
Directions: You are eager to apply for the position of a foreign enterprise advertised in a newspaper. Write an application letter that shows your major, specialty, ability in foreign languages and hobbies and expresses your strong desire to apply.
(你在报纸上看到一家外企的招聘广告,非常想去应聘。写一封申请信,内容包括专业、特长、外语能力、爱好等,并表明强烈应聘愿望)
Dear Sir,
Your advertisement offers a most tempting(有吸引力的、有诱惑力的)job to a young man just out of college. I can't think of any job I'd like better than a software development for a famous company like yours. I look upon it as a wonderful opportunity, and here is what I can offer you in return:
I am 22 years old, a hard working student who specialized in Computer Science and Application at Tsinghua University, from which I will graduate and get my BS degree in June this year. I can speak English quite well, and I am capable of programming in several computer languages and use computers very skillfully.
Besides, I like very much to participate in the group activities of all kinds. My work then becomes interesting and productive. The reason, in my opinion, is that working with people gives us power and competition. Rivalry is a very effective motive in improving one person's idea. So, group members may contribute different and essential resources to solve problems. Perhaps you will agree that these qualities─plus enthusiasm, persistence, and the willingness to work hard and long─make me acceptable for the job you offer as a beginner in your company. I believe I would do more and better work for you.
I enclose a letter of recommendation from Professor Liu, and a self-addressed(写明发信人姓名地址的)card, in hope that you will use it to tell me when to come for an interview.
And I look forward to hearing from you soon. (And your immediate reply will be greatly appreciated)
Sincerely yours,
Li Ming
(250 words)
