1998年考研写作第一次考到图画作文，这是中国考研命题组的独创，取得了巨大的成功，成为近年考研写作的主力题型。成功的重要一点在于图画作文不可能押到题目，因为谁也无法预测会考到什么图画。图画作文的第一段通常为图画描述段，需要考生自己描述图画，但不能发表议论，无法使用背诵的框架和句型。所以大家不能抱有侥幸心理，需要踏踏实实提高写作实力，打好基本功。
每次考研结束后命题组都会调整思路。1998年采用漫画形式命题是一种进步，但提纲不成熟。两点提纲导致文章畸形，应有开头、中间、结尾段。
虽然提纲只有两点，但正式的英文写作至少应写三段，所以考生应将两点提纲扩展为三点，第一段描述图画，第二段列举原因，第三段提出建议。当年虚假承诺的不正之风愈演愈烈，所以出了这样一道题目。两点提纲很简单，但图中说明性文字较多，考生切勿将文字机械地翻译为英文了事。和图表作文一样，需将文字说明心领神会，归纳论点。承诺本是分内的职责，但很多单位和个人据此做出各种承诺，全文应重点进行评论，而非描述图画。

当年全国平均分11.1，分数集中在8～16分之间，难度系数0.553，难度适中。40％的考生得分在12～14分之间，只有2.2％的考生得0分。大部分考生有话可说，但优秀范文并不多。这是由于缺少练习，不知如何抒发感情，或是照抄背诵的文章。因此，在写作中首先要看懂题目，切勿跑题。其次要挖掘题目的深层含义，力求生动深刻。同时应保持风格前后一致，不要一会儿用大词，一会儿用小词，出现头重脚轻的情况。如果短语和小词能够活学活用，会给文章增色不少。
2001年也是一次经典的图画作文命题，奠定了图画作文“情景＋提纲＋图画”三位一体的命题模式。图画本身虽简单，但具体描述其意境较困难，所以第一段考查图画的意义阐释。同时由于命题比较抽象，第二段考查了图画作文的举例论证。尽管第二、三点提纲中的example和suggestion均为单数，但动笔写作时，每段须至少举出两点例证或给出两点建议，才符合正式英文写作的规范。如只举一例，容易流于叙述，冲淡了整篇文章以议论为主的文体风格。每个例子最好在两句话之内说清楚，不必展开，抽象叙述即可。

图画作文的审题一定包含“以小见大，把握象征寓意”的过程。图画式写作是较难的题型之一，面对此类题型，考生应首先确定主题，然后再动笔。
