Ultimately, global warming is not a battle that will be fought fiscal year by fiscal year; it's a fight that will occupy us for generations. Our policies have to operate on the same time frame, even if our politics run on election cycles. We've learned from think tanks and war colleges that the outcome of any crisis is usually determined by one dominant global player that has the innovators who can churn out the technology, the financiers who can back it and the diplomatic clout to pull the rest of the planet along. That player, of course, exists, and it is, of course, us. The U.S. has enjoyed an awfully good run since the middle of the 20th century, a sudden ascendancy that no nation before or since has matched. We could give it up in the early years of the 21st, or we could recognize—as we have before—when a leader is needed and step into that breach ourselves. Going green: What could be redder, whiter and bluer than that?

At 7.13 last evening, a long- awaited moment anticipated by millions of Singaporeans had finally arrived. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced from the headquarters in Lausanne that Singapore had won the bid to be the host for the first Youth Olympic Games (YOG) in 2010.
The hundreds of thousands that had gathered outside the Padang erupted into an uproar upon hearing this piece of good news by the IOC. The thousands of millions who were anxiously having their eyes glued to the television at home, also jumped and leapt for joy.
Yes, it was indeed a moment that was deserved to be celebrated and called for. It was also a moment that we, Singaporeans, deserve to be proud of. The painstaking effort put in by citizens of every race for the past 7 months were now enjoying the fruit of their labour. The fact that Singapore was able to emerge victories in such a competitive global society today is truly precious and valuable. It is something that we should feel proud of.
We should be thankful for the efforts and hard work put in by the bid committee led by Ng Ser Miang. When Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong visited Hungary in October last year, he made a special trip to Lausanne and met up with IOC chief Jacques Rogge to understand the requirements of hosting the YOG and its spirit and purpose. The spirit of enthusiasm and sincerity displayed by the citizens of Singapore to host the YOG in 2010 convinced the IOC that a small island like us would be able to make a difference and host an outstanding YOG to mark this first game a success.
From that very moment when the IOC confirmed that Singapore would be the country to host the first Youth Olympic Games, preparations have officially started. We would complete all the necessary preparations that we need in this two and a half year’s time. This is to ensure that we would be able to give the 5000 over participants and millions of spectators all over the world, a warm welcome during the YOG. Although the Olympics is a prestigious sports event, but the significance behind it is more than just medals and sporting glory. As one of the most prosperous countries in South-East Asia, and with Singapore being the first country to host the first Youth Olympics, it would really be a boost for the image of Singapore, as well as, the image of the rest of South-East Asia.
Other than political significance, the hosting of the YOG would fuel Singapore’s economy and leave with us an enriching heritage in the area of sports. The YOG would reinforce the knowledge people have of the important value of sports and to also cultivate the culture of sports, and also strengthens the progression of sports in Singapore. At the same time, the YOG would tell the world that Singapore is a vibrant city that is full of life. She is also a multi-cultured and harmonious society.
The first YOG has a special meaning in the history of the Olympics. Needless to say, as the host of the games, Singapore has thus shouldered a heavy responsibility. Since it is going to be a maiden game, everyone would expect the host of the Olympic Games to set a good example and high standards. We not only need to ensure that the hardware is in place but also to seize the opportunity to fully showcase our potential in every aspect of software and leave an outstanding impression of Singapore to foreigners. This is to allow Singapore’s fine reputation to spread worldwide and also to inform the citizens of the world that Singaporeans are respectful, enthusiastic and friendly.

At 7:13 last night , a long-awaited piece of news has finally arrived from the headquarter of IOC in Lausanne Switzerland : Singapore’s bid to host the first Youth Olympic Games in 2010 has succeeded.
Nearly 10,000 people assembled in the square which is in front of the government building, watching the live broadcast of the event. After Jacques Rogge, the president of the IOC, announced the result, the crowd burst into thunderous cheers. Tens of thousands of audience waiting anxiously before the TV also celebrated the news with applause.
It was indeed a moment of joy and pride for all of us.7 months’ efforts devoted by people from all ethnic groups reaped their reward at last. The fact that our country can stand out from the rest among such fierce competition is truly a precious glory.
We should appreciate the efforts put in by the bid committee led by huang simian as well as the voluntary support given by people from all walks of life. During prime minister lee hsien loong’s visit to Hungary last October, he made a point of meeting Jacques Rogge in Lausanne in order to understand the requirements of hosting the YOG and its purpose and spirit. The nationwide sincerity has at last convinced the IOC that Singapore is able to host an outstanding YOG so as to make it recognizable from the start.
Arduous preparations will begin in earnest the moment we win the right to host the game. All preparations must be done in the next 2 and a half years, therefore we can warmly welcome 5000 young athletes from all over the world as well as tens of thousands of audience. Although it is a big sports gala, its significance goes far beyond sports. As a metropolis in southeast asia ,Singapore will thanks to the game greatly improve its own image and that of the region.
In addition to its political meaning, the host of YOG will bring us some economic benefits and leave us a profound sports legacy. YOG will also strengthen people’s awareness of sports value, cultivate sports culture and promote the development of sports in our country as well. Meanwhile, we will once again tell the world that Singapore is an energetic city full of life and a multi-cultured , harmonious society.
